How often should you walk your dog?

The answer changes enormously with breed and age, and more is not automatically better.

Rough daily guide for healthy adults

  • Flat-faced breeds (Frenchie, pug, bulldog) — 20–30 min, split, avoiding heat
  • Small companion breeds — 30–45 min
  • Medium breeds — 60 min
  • Working and sporting breeds — 90–120 min plus mental work
  • Giant breeds — 45–60 min, low impact, joint-protective

Puppies: the five-minute rule

A common guideline is five minutes of formal exercise per month of age, once or twice a day — so 15 minutes twice daily at three months. Growth plates in puppies are still open, and repetitive high-impact exercise before they close can cause lasting joint problems. Free play on soft ground where the puppy can stop when tired is different from a forced march, and much safer.

Mental work counts more than owners expect

Twenty minutes of sniffing on a loose lead tires many dogs more than an hour of brisk heeling. Scent work uses an enormous share of a dog's brain. If your dog is still bouncing after a long walk, the answer is usually enrichment rather than more distance: puzzle feeders, scatter feeding in grass, short training sessions, and letting them choose the route sometimes.

Signs of too little

Destructive chewing, restlessness in the evening, weight gain, barking at everything, difficulty settling. These are usually under-stimulation rather than disobedience.

Signs of too much

Lagging behind on walks, stiffness the next morning, reluctance to set off, licking paws or joints, sleeping unusually heavily. Older dogs and flat-faced breeds show this fastest. Two shorter walks generally beat one long one for both.

Weather

Test pavement with the back of your hand — if you cannot hold it comfortably for seven seconds, it is too hot for paws. In heat, walk early and late, and skip it entirely on the worst days. A missed walk is harmless; heatstroke is not.

Check for ticks after every walk through long grass: ears, armpits, groin and between the toes. A tick removed within 24 hours carries far less disease risk. How to remove a tick properly →

Common questions

Is one walk a day enough for a dog?

For many small and medium adult dogs, one substantial walk plus garden access and mental enrichment is adequate. Two shorter walks usually suit dogs better than one long one, and working breeds generally need considerably more.

How much exercise does a puppy need?

A widely used guide is five minutes per month of age, once or twice daily. Growth plates are still developing, so long or repetitive high-impact exercise should wait until the dog is mature.

My dog is never tired after walks — what should I do?

Add mental work rather than distance. Sniffing walks, puzzle feeders, scatter feeding and short training sessions tire most dogs faster than extra mileage.
